Is there something significant about that time?  Is that Presidential crunch time?  Do political problems become more difficult in the wee hours of the morning?  Do we expect the President to get any sleep?

A Purple Dinosaur's Open Letter to Geraldine Ferraro

Wed Mar 12, 2008 at 05:28:35 PM PDT

Dear Geraldine:

It's OK to have bad feelings about the other candidate when you are involved in a hotly contested political race.  When Baby Bop and BJ play ball, sometimes they get very mad at each other.  They both want to win.  But that is no excuse to get mean.  It's not nice to say that someone has success just because of their race.

Wesley Clark: Obama Unfit To Be President

Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 02:34:43 PM PDT

This is becoming disturbing.  Clinton advisors Wesley Clark and Jaime Rubin now making that argument - not simply that Clinton would make a better nominee - but that Obama is unqualified to be President.

What Exactly Is Waterboarding?

Fri Sep 29, 2006 at 02:57:50 PM PDT

If you are like me, you have heard vague references in the media to "waterboarding" without really understanding what the practice involves.  You may have heard that it is an interrogation method that stimulates the feeling of drowning.

I heard a former service member on the radio a couple days ago describing what it was like when he had been waterboarded as part of his SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training in the military.

It sounded like torture to me.

Some say in ice.

I hold with those who favor fire.

Christopher Columbus Was Evil (with poll)

Thu Aug 10, 2006 at 09:13:50 PM PDT

I don't know if anybody else caught this.  A new document was recently discovered in Spain describing previously unknown atrocities committed by Christopher Columbus during his reign as governor of Hispanola (modern day Dominican Republic).  What a monster.

Ralph Nader and Jesse Jackson: "Listen to me!" (w/ poll)

Sun Nov 13, 2005 at 12:23:54 PM PDT

So I just read an ESPN article in which Jesse Jackson says that the suspension of Philadelphia Eagle Wide Receiver Terrell Owen was much too severe.  Apparently, Ralph Nader has already called for the supsension to be rescinded.

What is wrong with these guys?  I have a strong suspicion that these two (and a bunch of others like them) are addicted to media attention and will talk about anything to keep their faces in the spotlight.

Did Protests Help End the Vietnam War?

Wed Aug 24, 2005 at 03:16:36 PM PDT

It is taken as a given among certain people, particularly many on the left, that massive protests helped end the Vietanm War.  The general idea here is that widespread resistence showed the government the unpopularity of continuing the war and eventually forced the government's hand, leading to withdrawal from Vietnam.  But is it true?  Is this a case of post hoc ergo procter hoc?

Wolcott: McCain is a Madman

Sun Aug 14, 2005 at 07:01:26 PM PDT

I used to lean toward the idea that John McCain was indeed a maverick, a Republican who could be reasoned with and who would buck the leadership when his conscience called.

The Iraq War has exposed him as a fraud.

Hi, I am johnny rotten's wife.  He doesn't know I am posting this, but I don't yet have my own user ID (I think that's what you "Kossacks" call it, lol).  Anyway, johnny rotten really loves playing with all his friends on Daily Kos, he spends so much time here I think it's going to break up our marriage!  Ha ha!  (The amount of time he spends looking at Internet porn is also troubling, but that's a whole nother problem!)

Is Donna Brazille a NeoCon?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 at 07:46:58 PM PDT

So I was reading James Wolcott's blog, when I came across this post about the latest efforts to whip up war fever.  Apparently, Hezbollah is the new target.  As James explains:

And lo, I switched on the set today and by chance see the words "Beware Hezbollah" on the screen beneath Wolf Blitzer's bearded mug. His guests were the authors of a new book called "Lightning out of Lebanon," about the threat posed by Hezbollah to the US mainland. The only hazy evidence of Hezbollah activity were threats against Anthony Lake which were never carried out but were "taken seriously." Well, hell, practically everything in this country is taken seriously as a precautionary measure. A ten-year-old can phone in a bomb scare and they'll evacuate the building. Means nothing.

Yet the authors made dark hints about Hezbollah cells in American cities, which presumably could be activated from Lebanon or elsewhere. The same talk we've been getting since 9/11 about the phantom Al Qaeda "sleeper cells" awakening their Manchurian Candidate coded "go" signals.

Desert Island: 10 Books

Fri Feb 25, 2005 at 02:48:38 PM PDT

You have just been convicted by the governemnt for engaging in seditious activity and sentenced to exile on a desert island for the remainder of your life.

However, the government has generously allowed you to bring with you 10 books (or book collections) to wile away your years in exile.  The government applies the sentencing rules very legalistically.  You can only count a book collection as one item if it is actually published as a set.  So take advantage of the loophole!

What choices would you make?
